Join fellow members of the Wolfe Pack, the literary society that celebrates all things Nero Wolfe, and Wolfean fans for a sumptuous meal in a gorgeous venue. Over the course of the evening, we celebrate Rex Stout’s Nero Wolfe stories by singing pastiches; completing hilarious quizzes about the opus; and toasting our favorite characters—Mr. Stout, Mr. Wolfe, Archie, Fritz, and “Other.” The format of this banquet is similar to the annual Black Orchid Banquet held by the Wolfe Pack every December in New York City— for those of you not near New York, this is your chance to share this special experience!

Time: Cocktails at 6:30 p.m. (Open bar for one hour)

Dinner at 7:30 p.m.

Location: Morton’s Steakhouse, 285 J Street, a 2-minute walk from the convention hotel,

2020 Nero Award & Black Orchid Novella Award Winners

 

The Nero Award is presented each year to an author for the best American Mystery written in the tradition of Rex Stout's Nero Wolfe stories. It is presented at the Black Orchid Banquet, traditionally held on the first Saturday in December in New York City. 

The Nero is considered one of the premier awards granted to authors of crime fiction. This year, the winner is David Baldacci's One Good Deed (Hatchette Book Group, an imprint of Grand Central Publishing). 

The Black Orchid Novella Award is presented jointly by The Wolfe Pack and Alfred Hitchcock Mystery Magazine to celebrate the novella format popularized by Rex Stout. This year's winner is Tom Larsen. El Cuerpo en el Barril (The Body in the Barrel). It will be published in July 2021 issue of Alfred Hitchcock Mystery Magazine. 

Both award winners were announced and recognized at an online Wolfe Pack event on December 5, 2020. The Wolfe Pack hopes to present the awards in person at the 2021 Black Orchid Banquet in New York City on December 4, 2021. 

About the Wolfe Pack 

The Wolfe Pack, founded in 1977, is a forum to discuss, explore, and enjoy the 72 Nero Wolfe books and novellas written by Rex Stout. The organization promotes fellowship and extends friendship to those who enjoy these great literary works of mystery through a series of events, book discussions, and a journal devoted to the study of the genius detective, Nero Wolfe, and his intrepid assistant, Archie Goodwin. The organization has more than 500 members worldwide.

2009 Nero Award Finalists announced

The Nero Wolf Organisation have announced the finalists of the 2009 Nero Award.

The "Nero" is an annual award presented to an author for literary excellence in the mystery genre. The award is presented at the Black Orchid Banquet, which is traditionally held on the first Saturday in December in New York City.

This year, the finalists are:

THE DARK TIDE Andrew Gross, Harper Collins
THE TENTH CASE Joseph Teller, MIRA
THE FAULT TREE Louise Ure, Minotaur Books

Rex Stout (1886-1975) was the author of over seventy novels and stories featuring the brilliant, irascible, and corpulent private detective Nero Wolfe, a lover of food, beer, and orchids. Stout was named a Grand Master by the Mystery Writers of America in 1959 and his Nero Wolfe stories continue to be popular throughout the world.

The Wolfe Pack has been around since 1978, and celebrates all things Nero Wolfe. For example, the society publishes a semi-annual Gazette and sponsors a variety of activities with Wolfean themes including a regular book discussion group and tours of locations mentioned in the corpus. The group has been holding its annual Black Orchid Banquet for more than thirty years. Congratulations to all the nominees.
