Remembering Joe Hartlaub [Sept 11 1951 - May 29 2025]

Shots Magazine’s editors Mike Stotter and I were devastated to hear the sad news of the passing of Joe Hartlaub, as were so many of us in the crime, mystery and thriller genre.

Apart from one of our Greatest Book Reviewers, specialising in Thriller Fiction, and a writer in his own right - he was a renowned attorney specialising in the Music Industry.

I was first aware of Joe’s reputation in the world of Thriller Fiction from Carol Fitzgerald’s Book Reporter. I enjoyed her weekly emails each and every Saturday Morning in my inbox; always seeking out Joe Hartlaub’s Thriller Picks and his reviews of newly published work.

I finally got to meet Carol and Joe in the summer of 2006, at International Thrillers’ [ITW] first convention, held at the Arizona Biltmore in Phoenix in 2006. We were jurors at an event entitled “The Jack Reacher Trial” which featured two attorneys on opposite sides of the mock courtroom, one for the prosecution, and one for the defence of Lee Child’s character [played by the author himself]. The attorneys were played by legal thriller writers who were actually lawyers in their day jobs. I recall one being Paul Levine but sadly my memory fails to recall the second legal thriller writer.

From that time onwards a friendship blossomed based on our love of all things bibliophilic.

Both Mike Stotter and I would enjoy meeting up with Carol and Joe on our annual excursions across the Atlantic at future Thrillerfests and Bouchercon conventions.

One of the most memorable times being Hat Shopping with Kelli Stanley and Joe in Cleveland Ohio, during Bouchercon 2012, as well as bumping into each other  several times during Bouchercon Indianapolis in 2009.

And the impromptu meeting on Bourbon Street in New Orleans in 2016

Joe would send me a text message audio recording of himself singing me Happy Birthday. Shortly after learning of his passing, I learned he was sending these little audio clips to many of his friends and colleagues.

They always raised a smile.

Both Mike and I had been in touch with Joe just last month, discussing meeting up during the 2025 Bouchercon in New Orleans this coming September. This city on the Louisiana Bayou was one of Joe’s favourite cities in North America – probably due to its rich music heritage, especially of the Blues. Joe had explained that though excited at the prospect – especially as we’d not seen each other since 2016 – however he said he was a tad ‘under the weather’, but hoped to get better in time for September’s Bouchercon.

Sadly, we heard via Carol Fitzgerald that Joe passed away last week.

Joe’s Obituary is HERE fittingly hosted at The Times-Picayune of New Orleans.

“Joe graduated from the University of Akron in 1973 with a Bachelor of Science (Accounting) and obtained a Juris Doctorate from the University of Akron [School of Law] in 1977, when he began a legal career spanning five decades. The majority of his 48 years in practice were devoted to entertainment law, thanks in no small part to Joe's lifelong love of music and the written word. He took great pleasure in helping his clients and worked tirelessly on their behalf. “

Signing off, the obituary closed with Chuck Berry line >

"'C'est la vie,' say the old folks, 'It goes to show you never can tell.'"

The Complete Obituary is HERE

Apart from the memories Joe leaves behind, his blogposts at Kill Zone remain archived and can be accessed HERE and when Joe retired from book reviewing at Bookreporter, in the summer of 2021, Carol Fitzgerald organised a special feature entitled “Hats Off to Joe Hartlaub” in which she asked many writers and colleagues of Joe to write a little about what Joe Hartlaub’s work meant to them – and it’s a fitting tribute to this dear friend and colleague of the world of Thriller Fiction.

It can be accessed HERE

And finally let’s conclude with a song

NY's Thrillerfest 2020: A Virtual Event in your Lounge

We were talking with thriller writer [and Executive Director of International Thriller Writers ITW’s annual conference THRILLEFEST], KJ Howe, following all this COVID-19, business.
With many gatherings cancelled, postponed et al, including this summer’s Thrillerfest, Kim Howe and her ITW colleagues decided to put on a virtual event

Firstly, CRAFTFEST, an online series of events, that can be ‘ZOOM-ed’ for the amateur and professional thriller writer. Secondly, the THRILLERFEST event for Thriller Fiction enthusiast, and a whole lot more.

So over to Kim -

Due to the pandemic this year, we’ve cancelled the in-person ThrillerFest Conference at the Grand Hyatt in New York City this July. The health and safety of our attendees is our top priority.

But we have fantastic news! We are offering a virtual conference so our attendees can remain safe in the comfort of their homes yet still participate in the learning and camaraderie that is the hallmark of the annual conference of the International Thriller Writers. No travel, no hotel stay, but an even more extensive array of bestselling ITW authors who can help you polish your thrillers and top drawer New York agents and editors to whom you can pitch—along with attractive prices!

We have an outstanding array of guests and publishing professionals, with this year’s event including a Free Debut Authors’ Presentation, Free ITW Author Videos, and a Free Awards Presentation.

Our Mega CraftFest, Master Class, Pitching Sessions, Consulting Sessions, and CareerFest will all be offered this July.

Read More for Details and Registration HERE

There are many within the crime and thriller community, helping provide content for ITW that can be viewed, interacted with, and debated for this event. I was flattered to be asked by author and ITW Technical Bloke Jeff Ayers to participate. I enjoyed recording amusing and insightful sessions with award-winning authors Michael Robotham in Sydney, Australia, as well as Jeffery Deaver, in North Carolina - while seated in England. Both authors [as well as many others] generously shared their insight into the writing and publishing process that surrounds the Thriller Narrative for Virtual Thrillerfest 2020.

I couldn’t believe it was the 15th year of ITW’s Thrillerfest, as I recalled the first event held in Arizona in 2006, and the incredible time when Mike Stotter and I attended the sophomore event in 2007, in New York, having a lot of fun HERE and HERE

So if you want an escape from lockdown, and you’re having a bad hair day, then why not head off to Thrillerfest this July, from the safety of your armchair.

The wearing of a Kevlar Facemask, during these virtual sessions remains optional.

A Tale of Two Thrillers

With London sweltering under a heatwave, many of us are pondering about our summer vacations; with the crucial question of what to pack in terms of our reading.

Carrying a few crime and thriller novels in our hand luggage is useful for managing the usual hassles of mass transit, as well as a distraction for the mind in these times of geopolitical and economic worries.

So the Shots Team were delighted to recently celebrate the launch of two such thrillers, tense novels that not only provide distractions from reality, but also provoke thought and make us question what we see as the reality presented to us from the various media sources.

Firstly Mike Stotter and I were invited to celebrate the launch of K J Howe’s nerve-shredding thriller Skyjack, which follows up the adventures of Hostage Negotiator Thea Paris from the ITW Best Debut novel of 2017 The Freedom Broker.

Kim Howe was in London to launch Skyjack, who with her Publishers Headline, invited several journalists / literary commentators and book reviewers to tell us a little about what is in store for Thea Paris and her team.

And a few photos from the event, as we recommend this highly energetic thriller.

Later I joined Ayo Onatade and several fellow Journalists to celebrate the launch of
Catherine Steadman’s Something in the Water, the NY Times bestseller.

I was amused to bump into Crime Writer Ross Armstrong at the launch, being unaware that Catherine Steadman is his wife – which amused this fellow actor / novelist.

Soon it was time for Catherine and her publisher Simon and Schuster to welcome the guests to the launch party for SOMETHING IN THE WATER

We present a few photos from the event, and recommend this engaging and dark thriller, with one of the most surreal openings I’ve read in some time.
