Each of our authors will be taking the stage and speaking about their latest book releases, answering questions from the audience and all will be signing their books for attendees.

The authors' books will  be on sale at the event and complimentary tea and cake will be served.

Come along and have a fun afternoon with your favourite authors and buy some Christmas gifts (even if they're for yourself!)

Forthcoming Crime Events at Heffers Bookshop Cambridge

This brand-new novel featuring Margery Allingham's Mr Campion recaptures the Golden Age of British Detective Fiction. The Danish Ambassador has requested Albert Campion's help on 'a delicate family matter'. He's very concerned about his eighteen-year-old daughter, who has formed an attachment to a most unsuitable young man.

Recruiting his unemployed actor son, Rupert, to keep an eye on Frank Tate, the young man in question, Mr Campion notes some decidedly odd behaviour on the part of the up-and-coming photographer. Before he can act on the matter, however, both the Ambassador's daughter and her beau disappear without trace. Then a body is discovered in a lagoon.  

With appearances from all of Margery Allingham's regular characters, from Campion's former manservant Lugg, to his wife Lady Amanda Fitton and others, this witty and elegant mystery is sure to delight Allingham's many fans. The dialogue is sharp and witty, the observation keen, and the climax is thrilling and eerily atmospheric.

A visit to Imogen's birthplace in Cambridge stirs up deja vu that intensifies his fears.While Detective Chief Inspector Morris Keene languishes at home, struggling with a debilitating injury and post-traumatic stress, his former partner Detective Inspector Chloe Frohmann is following a suicide case in which Morris's daughter Dora is suspected of assisting the death. When buried skeletons are discovered next to an old barn, the suicide is linked back to Imogen's childhood, revealing horrors of the past and new dangers in the present

Christmas Crime in Cambridge by Mike Ripley

Last night’s “Christmas Chrime” party at Heffers majestic bookshop in Cambridge – a festive celebration of crime fiction complete with mince pies and mulled wine – had added value this year as it also saw the official launch of the new anthology called, very appropriately, Bodies in the Bookshop, from Ostara Publishing.

Devised by Heffers’ crime fiction supremo Richard Reynolds and edited jointly by the Detection Club’s Len Tyler and Shots’ very own Ayo Onatade, the Bodies anthology celebrates the famous ‘Bodies in the Bookshop’ parties held at Heffers for twenty years with twenty stories of murder, mayhem and a surprising number of rather lethal bookshops!

Among the distinguished – positively star-studded – cast of contributors are: Andrew Taylor, Peter Lovesey, Simon Brett, Stella Duffy, Christopher Fowler and Ann Cleeves and at the launch itself a goodly number of contributing authors were on hand to sign copies, including Cambridge’s own Alison Bruce and Michele Spring, Suzette A. Hill and Ruth Dudley Edwards.

All those assembled used the launch party to join in a toast in honour of the late P. D. James, following a heartfelt tribute from crime-writer Nicola Upson who described Phyllis James as ‘a friend of crime writing and a friend of Heffers’ to whom everyone in the room – readers and writers – owed a significant debt'.

Cambridge, Heffers: An Evening with James Runcie
Thursday, June 26th at 18:30 

James Runcie is at Heffers to celebrate the third part of his Grantchester series: Sidney Chambers and the Problem of Evil, published in May 2014. It is the 1960s and Canon Sidney Chambers is enjoying his first year of married life with his German bride Hildegard. But life in Grantchester rarely stays quiet for long. Our favourite clerical detective soon attempts to stop a serial killer who has a grievance against the clergy; investigates the disappearance of a famous painting after a distracting display of nudity by a French girl in an art gallery; uncovers the fact that an 'accidental' drowning on a film shoot may not have been so accidental after all; and discovers the reasons behind the theft of a baby from a hospital in the run-up to Christmas, 1963. In the meantime, Sidney wrestles with the problem of evil, attempts to fulfil the demands of Dickens, his faithful Labrador, and contemplates, as always, the nature of love. Sidney Chambers and the Shadow of Death is being adapted for television and will run as Grantchester, a six part series in the autumn of 2014. An Evening with Mike Ripley

Join us to celebrate Mike Ripley's latest novel  Mr Campion's Farewell. 
Mike Ripley is not only a lifelong Allingham fan but has lived in ‘Allingham country’ in north-east Essex for 40 years. It was not until 2012, however, that he learned of the fragment of manuscript (just over four chapters) of Youngman Carter’s unfinished third novel. With the blessing of the Margery Allingham Society, Mike not only completed the novel, which is now published as Mr Campion’s Farewell, but also edited reissues of Youngman Carter’s two Campion novels for Ostara Publishing, bringing them back into print for the first time in twenty years.Tickets available from:

Bodies in the Bookshop December Events

The crime, mystery and thriller section at Heffers Bookstore [a division of Blackwells] is one of the most extensive in England, and we’re delighted to advise Shots Readers of some interesting events.

We hope all of you will be buying books for Christmas Presents, and Heffers in Cambridge have a late night shopping event which should help, with pre-Christmas late shopping on Wednesdays open until 1930 hrs.

Jill Paton Walsh is an English novelist and children's writer. Come and join Jill celebrate her latest book in the Peter Winsey and Harriet Vane series.

Her latest book ‘The Late Scholar’ is a new murder mystery featuring Lord Peter Wimsey - now a Duke - and his wife Harriet Vane, set in an Oxford college in the 1950s. Peter Wimsey is pleased to discover that along with a Dukedom he has inherited the duties of 'visitor' at an Oxford college. When the fellows appeal to him to resolve a dispute, he and Harriet set off happily to spend some time in Oxford.
